The IPL is the most-watched cricketing league in the world. With ten teams battling each other for the Golden Trophy, the tempo which is set by the league is one worth noticing. The whole country enters a period of almost complete lockdown once a match starts, and the IPL finals are usually the most watched events on television throughout that year in India. The ten teams all have produced extreme class, but one team which has been one of the most successful and consistent is Chennai Super Kings. The CSK is an all-round team with the batting strength of Ruturaj Gaekwad, the bowling skills of Deepak Chahar, and the captaincy and keeping of MS Dhoni. And yet there are some players that CSK might have to let go of in 2023. Here are three of them :
1) Chris Jordan –
Chris Jordan has been England’s go-to all-round for T20s since quite some time. He was purchased by Chennai Super Kings for ₹ 3.60 crores. Jordan, though, failed to leave a mark for the team as he only picked two wickets in the four innings he played. His economy rate crossed 8.9 runs per innings. What put the final nail in his coffin was the match against Gujarat Titans, where Chennai was about to win the game, but due to an over which included 25 runs from Jordan, the title-winners were able to snatch away the game at the last moment. CSK is sure to let him go this time around.
2) Tushar Deshpande –
Not much has been heard about this youngster who was bought by the CSK at his base price of ₹20 lakhs. He was brought in as a replacement for Deepak Chahar, who was going through an injury. Deshpande was included in the squad for the first two games of CSK, where he took a single wicket while giving away runs at an economy of over 10. After that, he was dropped from the squad and the inclusion and success of Mukesh Chaudhary and Simarjeet Singh removed him from the picture altogether. With Chahar and Milne both returning for the next season of the IPL, it is highly unlikely that the player will be retained.
3) Robin Uthappa –
The surprise name on the list, Uthappa, as a senior player, wouldn’t be someone’s first guess for a name on this list. But as it turns out, after a rather disappointing outing with the CSK in 2022, it seems that he will be dropped from the team next year, especially since his preferred batting slots have now been taken up by fitter and more explosive players like Gaekwad, Conway, and Moeen Ali. He has from time to time performed exceptionally, but if the CSK is left with no option, they might choose to let him go. Perhaps a franchise like the Mumbai Indians might go after him, as they are in severe need of an experienced batsman up top.
